Magdalena Luxemotor built in 1925, riveted iron, at originally 24.5 meters by 4.2 beam and a draft now of 1.10 and about 40 tons. Extended to 28.5 metres and topsides raised in 1960s making for very pleasing hull lines. Re engined in 1960s with a Kromhout Gardner 6 cylinder 90hp, with a twin disc gear box. Had new stern gear, prop shaft and bronze propeller fitted then. Cargo carrying until the 80s when it became a living boat on the Amstel, Amsterdam. We bought her as a living boat and have converted her back to a cruising barge. Magdalena is Dutch registered. She has been cut and is now just under 20metres (important for travelling in the EU, solving the bureaucratic problems of over 20 metres). Now a very comfortable, easily handled ship with ample power, an economical and quiet motor, with plenty of living space for 2-6 people, (has slept up to 8) in two separate living spaces, plus wheel house double bunk. Now has water tanks of 2000litres, fuel tanks of 1000litres total, electric system consisting of 24V battery bank total of 1000AMP (8 x 250 AMP batteries new 3 years ago), solar panels totalling approximately 1000Watt, ample capacity for the whole summer. She has a 240V inverter, 50AMP and 30AMP battery chargers, 10KVA silent pack group generator, plenty of power for all working tools and welding. Working tools etc are

The wheelhouse can be accessed from the aft cabin by a ladder. We have extended the wheelhouse aft and now it has a settee which pulls out to become a bunk. It is a comfortable lounging area. Sound insulation has been installed on the wheel house floor as the engine room is underneath The engine room spans the full width of the hull with good head room and plenty of space for bike storage etc. There is access through the engine room to forward living area. A large bathroom, full sized shower, sink, vanity, toilet and washing machine and a gas califont hot water unit. The main cabin is open plan with kitchen, dining and lounge area. There is a dining table and good solid wooden kitchen bench space, a double sink, 240V fridge and small freezer. Pressure water system, gas cooking and plenty of cupboard space. Wood burning stove, two settees which pull out to become double beds. The three large opening skylights give lots of light and ventilation. The eight bronze opening ship portholes making for a bright and airy interior. Solid oak flooring with underfloor insulation - all designed to lift up and give access to the hull. Large forward cabin/workshop with batteries, generators and tools - this area is not insulated yet.
On Deck. All deck has been stripped, primed, repainted over the last 3 years.
From the stern. Stern anchor and winch. A hand operated crane 300kg lift, 10ft fibreglass rowing dinghy (also at present a BMW motorbike on aft deck).
Wheelhouse. This area is original with teak woodwork. It is well designed for single handing through locks etc. The wheelhouse height is 3.2mtrs and can be lowered to 2.7mtrs. Original wooden hatch covers have been improved with insulation and covered with canvas. There is a large open forward deck which is a comfortable, relaxing space in hot weather. This space is ideal for al fresco dining with easy access to galley. There is a traditional anchor winch on forward deck with heavy chain and anchor.
Magdalena is still a basic work style barge, easily maintained, topsides tar painted. This is a work barge with no pretensions, self contained with simple systems.
Over the last 5 years she has been a comfortable and wonderful home on the water for us, year round, from northern Holland to Central France.
Het schip is inmiddels in Amsterdam en heeft een uitgebreide werfbeurt gehad met een prima survey.
