Antieke Victoriaanse satijn brokaat bustle jurk. The Duchess
An Antique 2 Piece Late Victorian Maroon/Burgundy Satin Bustle Gown dated to around 1886-88 (skirt altered in around 1891 to update the style) - Size XS-S The dress is made of heavy satin with brown and silvery white brocaded inserts on the centre of the bodice, the cuffs and skirt. The bodice is perfectly tailored and lined with beige cotton. It is fully boned and closes on the front inside with a neat row of mother of pearl buttons - unusually so, there are white mop buttons on the top half of the bodice and grey smokey (tahiti) mop buttons on the bottom half. The brocaded section then folds over and closes under one lappel with hooks and eyes. The skirt is made of the same satin and mounted on a brown cotton lining. It is a double structure with an interior skirt and then an overlay. Parts of the original woollen protective braid at the hem remain. The centre front has a beautifully pleated satin ruffle attached to the hem. The skirt closes on the back (needs new hooks and eyes, as it does not have a closure at the moment). The dress is predominantly hand, but also machine sewn in parts.
