Darío Villalba Flórez he was born in San Sebastián in 1939. He received training at the San Fernando school of fine arts in Madrid, in the workshop of André Lothe in Paris, and at the department of plastic arts at Harvard University. In 1966 he began creating his figures in methacrylate and plastic capsules in an expressionist style. He abandoned painting in 1972 and turned to black-and-white photography, experimenting with processes of decomposition and re-composition and exploring themes such as dementia, cruelty and violence.
In 2001 the galician contemporary art centre (cgac) hosted an exhibition entitled documentos básicos 1957-2001; (basic documents 1957-2001), a diary in images which describes the general aims of his work.
