Ai Weiwei is an activist, architect, curator, filmmaker, and Chinas most famous artist. As an activist, he calls attention to human rights violations on an epic scale; as an artist, he expands the definition of art to include new forms of social engagement. In a country where free speech is not recognized as a right, the police have beaten him up, kept him under house arrest, bulldozed his newly-built studio and subjected him to surveillance. He is viewed as a threat to "harmonious society."
Type: Offset print on paper
Measurement: 24" x 36"
In a compelling and beautiful new print, Ai Weiwei calls attention to our shared humanity by adapting the style of classical Greek friezes and vase paintings to depict the many forms of the contemporary global refugee condition. This brand new print is being unveiled on the occasion of Ais ambitious citywide Public Art Fund exhibition Good Fences Make Good Neighbors, on view in New York City Oct 2017 Feb 2018. The bold and striking imagery in Odyssey is based on a work of the same title featured in the exhibition.
Ai Weiwei: Good Fences Make Good Neighbors is a multi-site, multi-media exhibition commissioned for 300+ public spaces, monuments, buildings, transportation sites, and advertising platforms throughout New York City. Collectively, these elements comprise a passionate response to the global migration crisis and a reflection on the profound social and political impulse to divide people from each other. 100% of the proceeds from this sale benefit Public Art Funds presentation of the exhibition.
