No mention of where it was recorded, but chances are that it was in Senegal, because Seck and his band, Raam Daan, don't pull any punches in their energetic delivery. With a drummer and three percussionists, there are plenty of counter-rhythms happening, and the tama drums chatter across the beat incessantly. Rising above it all, however, is Seck's griot wail, enough to make anyone listen when he really cuts loose. Everyone gets a good workout on these pieces, none of which is short -- the first two alone, "Dibylo" and "Talibi," run over 11 minutes each -- but never do they mire down, buoyed along both by the enthusiasm of the players and Seck's phenomenal energy at the front. Plenty of guests stop by, including Ismael Lo and Omar Pene, both stars in their own right, to duet with Seck, but they never pull the spotlight away from him. This is very much the real deal of mbalax, not the sanitized, diluted version Youssou N'Dour has often presented on his Western albums and, from the crowd's reaction, it's exactly what they want. Hardcore, on the dancefloor, Seck plays it long and loud. It's a great way to celebrate 15 years with the same band.
