Richard Came, who specializes in silver at Sotheby's has written a simple and informative account of the greatest periods of the silversmith's art, the sixteenth, the seventeenth and eightteenth centuries.
The 124 illustrations include many celebrated pieces: Cellini's salt-cellar, the Lennoxlove toilet service, the Berkelev dinner service, a tea service by Paul Revere. The text describes the most famous makers and discusses the making of silver, its hall-marks and restorations, and the regulations of the many goldsmiths' company.
