The image displays an example of Dyula weaving, a traditional West African textile art form.

  • Origins and Location: The Dyula people, historically nomadic merchants (the name "Dyula" means "merchant" in Mandé), brought their weaving and dyeing trade across West Africa. Today, they primarily live in Mali, Côte d'Ivoire, and Burkina Faso, with a prominent weaving village called Waraniéné in northern Côte d'Ivoire.
  • Technique: Dyula weavers traditionally create long, narrow strips of cotton cloth on small looms, which are then sewn together to form larger textiles. The craft is typically passed down generationally from father to son.
  • Design and Patterns: These textiles feature a variety of geometric designs, often using indigo blue and mud-brown dyed threads. The patterns can be enhanced by tie-dyeing or using specific motifs like "Cari Cari". The designs often cater to the tastes of neighboring groups, such as the Senufo people, to whom the cloth is sold.
  • Cultural Significance: In 2023, traditional weaving from the Ivory Coast was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognizing the importance of this craft.
