NOTA BENE: Er bestaat géén Nederlandse versie van een catalogus van de tentoonstelling in het Rijksmuseum over de beeldende kunst uit de jaren die direct vooraf gingen aan de Gouden Eeuw. Deze periode staat bekend als het maniërisme. Voorafgegaan door vijf essays worden 347 voorwerpen uitvoerig beschreven.
Uit deze meest uiteenlopende kunstvormen, van schilderijen tot zilver, glas, meubels en kledingstukken, spreekt een onverwacht grote zin tot spectaculaire effecten en luxe. Veel Nederlandse kunstenaars en handwerkslieden werkten ook voor buitenlandse hoven.
De catalogus is geschreven door een team van specialisten en bedoeld voor vakgenoten en gevorderde leken. Het boek telt ca. 100 kleurenplaten en meer dan 1100 zwart-wit illustraties. In de tekst is de vele vakliteratuur over de periode samengevat en in het licht geplaatst van nieuwe inzichten.

This large volume, the catalog for a major exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, covers an important transition period in the art of the Netherlands, just before the era of Rembrandt, Vermeer, and other masters. Although the exhibit includes work by such well-known artists as Franz Hals and Hendrick Goltzius, the bulk of the art work will be unfamiliar to nonspecialists. Painting, sculpture, architecture, and the decorative arts are all included. Several long essays begin the volume, and over 1000 small black-and-white photographs and 100 full-page color plates of the exhibited artists are accompanied by full scholarly annotations. A substantial acquisition for specialized collections.

A period of stagnation was followed by an astonishing flowering of Mannerism around 1590, with Cornelis van Haarlem, Karel van Mander and Hendrick Goltzius in Haarlem and Adriaan Bloemaert and Joachim Wittewael in Utrecht as its most important representatives.
The first decades of the seventeenth century subsequently showed a great diversity and richness in the arts, heralding the glories of the Golden Age.
Painters and Draughtsman like Esaisas van de Velde and Hendrick Avercamp discovered the Dutch landscape, portraiture became a speciality of great importance with Michiel van Mierevelt and Frans Hals and the still life and genre piece came into being as autonomous art forms. Pieter Lastman and his circle provided new stimuli for history painting.
This book has been written by a team of specialists in the field, many of them from Rijksmuseum curatorial departements.
