Gottfried Helnwein is een Oostenrijkse artiest, die volop experimenteert met een verscheidenheid aan mediums.
Hij heeft gewerkt als schilder, technisch tekenaar, fotograaf, beeldhouwer, performance artist, etc.

Het werk van Helnwein is vaak gruwelijk, behandeld thema's als schuld, onschuld en onrecht aan de hand van terugkerende motieven: kinderen, zwachtels, medisch gereedschap, en comics. Hij produceert tekeningen, schilderijen, video en veel fotografie, maar ook decors voor theater. Door het direct confronterende karakter van zijn werk is het nogal omstreden.

Deze mooi uitgegeven monografie is verschenen n.a.v. een grote overzichtstentoonstelling in de Hermitage te St. Petersburg. Het boek geeft een compleet overzicht en de reproducties zijn groot een goed.

The metaphor for his art is dominated by the image of the child, particularly the wounded child, scarred physically and emotionally from within.[1] His works often reference taboo and controversial issues from recent history, especially the Nazi rule and the Holocaust. As a result, his work is often considered provocative and controversial.

Helnwein has produced artworks for rock bands the Rolling Stones, Scorpions and Rammstein. He has also partnered with Marilyn Manson in the production of The Golden Age of Grotesque and other projects.
