Description

The Perception 200 is a fixed-cardioid, large-diaphragm FET condenser microphone. It is identical to the Perception 100, with the addition of a high-pass filter and switchable pad.

The pad and filter are engaged via switches on the microphone body.

The frequency graphs for the Perception 100 and Perception 200 are identical, with flat response from 80Hz to 5000Hz, and a +2dB rise centered at 10kHz. Note that although AKG’s published frequency range starts at 20Hz, the mic’s -3dB point is closer to 50Hz.

The Perception 220, 420, 820, 100, 200 and 400 share the same capsule platform which is [a] one-inch, center-terminated and true condenser.

According to mic modder Michael Joly, the Perception 200 capsule is a derivative of the Neumann K67, with the characteristic backplate drilling pattern and high-frequency rise associated with that capsule design.

The mic, like all the large-diaphragm Perception microphones, uses an output transformer.

It did a good job — good enough that I would recommend it for budget studios that are looking for an all-purpose mic to add to their arsenal. The Perception 200 sounds good, can handle serious SPL, and is surprisingly directional, making it perfect for snares, cranked amps, bazookas, etc.
