Prachtige 1e dag enveloppe met handtekeningen van de luchtpost.
The first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean by balloon was Evelien Brink (Netherlands), who, aged 30, made the journey in a Rozière balloon (helium/hot air mix) named Dutch Viking, along with her husband Henk Brink (captain) and Royal Dutch Air Force pilot Major Willem Hageman, between 31 August and 2 September 1986. The trio took off from St John's, Newfoundland, Canada, and touched down in a wheat field near Almere, Netherlands, after a total flight time of 51 hours 14 minutes.
This was also the first successful transatlantic crossing by a Rozière balloon. The trio had made an attempt on the same route the previous year in the balloon Flying Dutchman, but they were forced to ditch into the ocean some 900 miles west of Land's End, UK, owing to technical issues, where they were then rescued by a passing merchant ship.
At the time, this also set a record for the fastest balloon crossing of the Atlantic.
The first balloon crossing of the Atlantic Ocean was achieved on 17 August 1978 by Maxie Leroy Anderson, along with copilots Ben Abruzzo and Larry Newman (all USA), flying the helium balloon Double Eagle II. They departed on 11 August from Presque Isle, Maine, USA, and landed in Miserey, France, covering 5,000 km (3,100 miles) in 137 hours 6 minutes.
