VEENHUIZEN (UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE SINCE 2021) in the northern part of
The Netherlands, in the vernacular the “Kolonie”, has been a mysterious village since 1818. It was closed off from the outside world until about 1985. If you had no business
in Veenhuizen, you would not ever enter its walls. The population consisted of officials (mostly guards) and prisoners. From a beggar’s colony of widows, orphans and vagabonds, it grew into a pure prison village “BajesDorp” (“ClinkVillage”) over the years. It became nearly totally selfsupporting. The detainees slept in a dining-dormitory room with 80 other men in hammocks and later in steel cages, which they produced in the forges in Veenhuizen. Around 1960, more and more serious criminals of all nationalities came to Veenhuizen, even with life sentence. All under one roof, this regularly led to mistrust, tension, unrest, fights and spectacular escape attempts. The guards had to keep silent about this. The backgrounds of the prisoners were not discussed. In this way, the Bajes stories were kept under wraps for a long time. “ClinkVillage Veenhuizen” was and thus remained a mystery to everyone until well into the 1980s. Only when the guards had to leave Veenhuizen due to their retirement, they were able to tell their stories, but most remained silent.... Exciting entanglements and fascinating escape attempts from the history of Veenhuizen have been collected by Clemens van den Brink in his first book
