Soms hoor je straatmuzikanten spelen die het niveau van hun collega’s ruimschoots overstijgen. In 2011 was het weer zover. Op de hoofdstedelijke Dam, zo’n honderd meter van de plek waar decennia geleden Dave Stewart moet hebben staan tokkelen, werden de opklaringen in het buienfront opgevuld door de prachtige klanken van gitarist Carlos Vamos en dulcimerspeler Lindsay Buckland. Een dulcimer is een snaarinstrument uit de Appalachen dat eruit ziet als een exotisch houtsnijwerkje voor aan de muur en dat ik natuurlijk had moeten fotograferen. Het tweetal noemt zich The Famous Unknowns en heeft inmiddels een dubbel-cd in de verkoop. Enige probleem: ze hebben geen jewelcases voor dubbel-cd’s, dus het product wordt in twee afzonderlijke envelopjes aan de man gebracht. Het echte straatdealen dus.
Internet meldt het volgende over het tweetal: 'Original and instrumental, their music is described as world music, or ambient; exceedingly relaxing, without forfeiting rhythm, and replete with melody. It is highly infectious, slightly psychedelic and characterized by a sort of Pink Floyd spaced out style. Mr Buckland, who is from Australia, plays an Appellation Dulcimer, which looks as weird as it sounds, and Mr Vamos, from Spain, uses the tapping technique on his electric guitar, whereby he touches the notes like a piano, playing with both hands on the fingerboard, as many as three melodies at the same time.
The duo met in Amsterdam on Mr Buckland’s first European tour in 1991. He was having a coffee at the Central Station and walked across to find Mr Vamos playing away. Two days later, he was playing in another busy square and it was Mr Vamos who saw him. That was when they connected and the rest is history…’
