Critics: wikipedia: 'Charles Carleton Coffin (July 26, 1823 – March 2, 1896) was an American journalist, war correspondent, author and politician. Coffin was one of the best-known newspaper correspondents of the American Civil War. He has been called "the Ernie Pyle of his era," and a biographer, W.E. Griffis, referred to him as "a soldier of the pen and knight of the truth."
'Abraham Lincoln (‘father of multitudes’, ‘father of the nation’, 'Honest Abe') was born on February 12, 1809, the second child of Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln, in a log cabin in Kentucky, a slave state.
Abraham was tall, strong, and athletic, and became skilled at using an ax. He was an active wrestler during his youth and became county wrestling champion at the age of 21.
In 1831, Abraham’s family moved to a new home and Abraham struck out on his own. Part of his living became the transport of goods and hogs by flatboat to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he first witnessed slavery.
n 1832, Abraham declared his candidacy for the Illinois House of Representatives, but interrupted his campaign to serve as a military captain during the Black Hawk War. When Abraham returned home, he purchased a general store on credit.
He continued his readings and decided to become a lawyer. He borrowed legal texts from attorneys and read law on his own. He later said of his legal education that "I studied with nobody."
In 1836 he was admitted to the Illinois bar. He moved to Springfield and began to practice law under a cousin of Mary Todd, his later wife.
Abraham emerged as a formidable trial combatant during cross-examinations and closing arguments.
In 1842, Abraham married Mary Todd (‘my marrying with Mary Todd is a matter of profound wonder’).
He was an affectionate husband and eventually father of four sons, though his work regularly kept him away from home. The eldest, Robert Todd Lincoln, was born in 1843, and was the only child to live to maturity. Edward Baker Lincoln (Eddie), born in 1846, died February 1, 1850, probably of tuberculosis. Lincoln's third son, "Willie" Lincoln, was born on December 21, 1850, and died of a fever at the White House on February 20, 1862. The youngest, Thomas "Tad" Lincoln, was born on April 4, 1853, and survived his father, but died of heart failure at age 18 on July 16, 1871.
The deaths of their sons Eddie and Willie had profound effects on both parents. Abraham suffered from depression. Later in life, after Abraham’s death, Mary struggled with the stresses of losing her husband and sons, and in 1875 Robert committed her to an asylum.
In 1837, Abraham declared, "[The] Institution of slavery is founded on both injustice and bad policy, but the promulgation of abolition doctrines tends rather to increase than abate its evils."
(Peoria Speech, 1854) “Little by little, but steadily as man's march to the grave, we have been giving up the OLD for the NEW faith. Nearly eighty years ago we began by declaring that all men are created equal; but now from that beginning we have run down to the other declaration, that for SOME men to enslave OTHERS is a 'sacred right of self-government.' These principles cannot stand together. They are as opposite as God and mammon; and whoever holds to the one, must despise the other.”
House Divided Speech, 1858 with the biblical reference Mark 3:25, "A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved—I do not expect the house to fall—but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other.
On November 6, 1860, Lincoln was elected the 16th president.
The South was outraged by Lincoln's election. In December 1860, South Carolina took the lead by adopting an ordinance of secession; by February 1, 1861, Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas followed. Six of these states declared themselves to be a sovereign nation, the Confederate States of America, and adopted a constitution.
President Buchanan and President-elect Lincoln refused to recognize the Confederacy, declaring secession illegal.
On February 11, 1861, several thousand citizens of Springfield, Illinois gathered at the train depot to see Lincoln depart for his inauguration in Washington, D.C. In response, he gave this speech from his railroad car, in the middle of a heavy rainstorm:
My friends, I now leave, not knowing when, or whether ever, I may return.
Without the assistance of the Divine Being I cannot succeed. With that assistance I cannot fail. Trusting in Him let us confidently hope that all will yet be well.
To His care commending you, as I hope in your prayers you will commend me, I bid you an affectionate farewell.
Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14 1865. he died in the morning of April 15, Good Friday.
