This Chinese soapstone brushwasher from the Qing dynasty is intricately carved in the form of a five-peaked mountain, symbolizing the Five Great Mountains (), sacred in Daoist tradition and representing harmony between heaven and earth.
Below the majestic peaks, a carp leaps from turbulent waves, referencing the legend of Longmen (), where a carp that successfully jumps over the Dragon Gate transforms into a dragon, a powerful metaphor for perseverance and success.
The combination of these motifs imbues the piece with deep cultural meaning, representing both spiritual elevation and the scholar’s pursuit of excellence. It served as both a functional object and a symbol of aspiration.
