According to S.J. SC, he acquired this Socketed Gouge in the 1970's through an direct purchase from collector and kept it in his private collection until 2020.

The socketed gouge from the Late Bronze Age was a specialized woodworking tool used by skilled craftspeople for carving and hollowing out wood. Unlike flat chisels, gouges had a curved cutting edge, making them ideal for shaping concave surfaces, such as in boatbuilding, furniture making, or even creating decorative elements in wooden objects.
The socketed design, where the handle was inserted into a hollow socket rather than being attached to a tang, provided greater durability and strength. This innovation made the tool more resistant to breakage and allowed for easy replacement of wooden handles.
