Deze Gwaneum uit de Choson-periode is een verguld lakbronzen bodhisattva, zittend in meditatie met de Dhyana mudra op een lotustraal, uit privécollectie.



A Choson period 16/17th century gilt lacquered and polychromed bronze Gwaneum (in Chinese Guanyin) Bodhisattva figure seated in a mediative pose displaying the Dhyana mudra on a lotus-throne. The figure is dressed in layers of robes and the chest and arms are adorned with various jewelries. The hair is tied up into a knot adorned with a crown.

Gwanseeum-bosal means “the hearer of cries,” in English. Gwanseeum-bosal was born from a ray of light emanating from Amita-bul’s right eye. As a result of her origins, Gwanseeum-bosal is closely associated with Amita-bul (The Buddha of the Western Paradise). In fact, Gwanseeum-bosal is thought to be the Bodhisattva incarnation of Amita-bul, and so she’s often situated to the left of Amita-bul in Korean Buddhist temples as an aid that brings enlightenment (a freedom from suffering) to all sentient beings.

Karl Stirner (November 14, 1923 – February 18, 2016) was a Germany-born American sculptor known internationally for his metalwork. His work has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art, the James A. Michener Art Museum, the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey, the Delaware Art Museum, and other locations.

Condition:
The figure has lacquer loss, (gilt-)lacquer wear and some accumulated dirt/dust. Some parts of the lower side of the throne are missing. The pictures give more details about the condition. The lot is sold "as is".

Shipping: The lot will be securely packaged and shipped with insurance. Even thou we will package the lot very securely, small loss of lacquer could happen during shipment.
