See also a similar Blanc de Chine cockerel illustrated by P.J. Donnelly in Blanc de Chine, New York, 1969, plate 109, number C, where he notes the following on page 186:

“A white cock was worshipped in a temple in Foochow, according to Doolittle, who also tells of a curious custom whereby one of these, or a representation, is taken to meet the body of a deceased person being brought back to the family home. But in the main these white fowls (Plate 109C, D) were exported to Europe. All of them whether from Têhua or Chingtêchên, appear to belong to the Ch'ien-lung period (1736-95). It is significant that there were none at Dresden by 1727, according to the inventory, whereas later in the eighteenth century they turn up in Paris. In 1755 the jeweller Lazare Duvaux sold a pair of these birds, tricked out in ormolu with Meissen flowers as three- branch candlesticks, to La Pompadour, and two-branch versions are also known. They usually stand on low rectangular plinths, but occasionally perch on rockwork. They are even to be found with the head sawn off and mounted in silver, for use as a jug. Since the body is hollow and the beak open for a firing vent, this is possible, though more curious than practical.”
