This exquisite vertical ban diptych is a classic work by Utagawa Hiroshige, the preeminent master of Edo-period ukiyo-e. The original was created in the 19th century, circa 1841–1842 (Tenp era 12–13). This high-quality reproduction was issued by Japan’s renowned Adachi Hanga Institute between the 1950s and 1970s—one of the most respected institutions for ukiyo-e reproductions, celebrated for preserving the master’s original craftsmanship and color fidelity.

The print depicts Saruhashi Bridge in tsuki (modern-day Yamanashi Prefecture), an iconic landmark on the historic Ksh Kaid highway during the Edo period (1603–1868). Famous for its dramatic setting between steep canyon cliffs and intricate wooden structure, the bridge stands as a masterpiece of Hiroshige’s "meisho-e" (famous places) genre—art that celebrates Japan’s scenic and cultural heritage.

Hiroshige employs a striking low-angle vertical composition, using the canyon’s rocky walls as a natural frame to draw the eye to the bridge suspended above the rushing Katsura River. Distant villages and mountain ranges unfold in layers, creating profound depth and spatial drama. A full moon rises behind the bridge, casting soft light on travellers, porters, and a horse loaded with goods—all rendered in cool blues and grays that evoke the serene stillness of a moonlit night. The foreground cliffs, midground pine forests, and background hills form a harmonious landscape, embodying Hiroshige’s signature aesthetic: simplified lines, bold color blocks, and a delicate capture of light and atmosphere that lends the scene a poetic, timeless quality.

The title "Ky Saruhashi no zu ()" is inscribed vertically in the upper right, followed by Hiroshige’s signature "Hiroshige ga ()" and a red artist’s seal. At the bottom, a small paulownia crest seal—the official hallmark of Adachi Hanga Institute—authenticates this reproduction.

Due to age, the original mounting wrapper shows yellowing, foxing and partial damage. The washi paper exhibits natural ageing, minor foxing, creases and edge damage in the upper right corner. Overall, the condition remains good considering its age.
