Amida Nyorai (Amitbha) is a Buddha who saves all living things. Gohonzon of more than half of all temples in Japan is Amida Nyorai and it is a very important Buddha in Buddhism.

Zushi "Buddhist altar", sometimes spelled Butsudan, is a small type of shrine or temple commonly found in temples and homes in Japanese Buddhist cultures.

This compact zushi enshrines Amida Nyorai (Amitbha), the Buddha of Infinite Light and the central figure of Pure Land Buddhism. Revered for his boundless compassion, Amida vows to guide all beings toward enlightenment, making him one of the most widely worshiped deities in Japan. The serene expression of the figure, seated upon an ornate lotus pedestal, evokes the tranquility and reassurance associated with Amida’s saving grace. The black lacquered miniature shrine, lined with a softly gilded interior, was designed for personal devotion and could be placed in a household altar or carried during travel. The subdued wear, age-darkened surfaces, and naturally developed patina lend the piece a quiet dignity, reflecting many decades of reverent use. Based on its construction and style, this example is thought to date from the first half of the 20th century.
