Portrait of Caspar Barlaeus. Born 12 February 1584 in Antwerp, Belgium. Died 14 January 1648 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Etching and Engraving by Theodor Matham (1589-1676), after Joachim von Sandrart (1606-1688), 1786. Reasonable condition. Paper a bit browned and rather creased. Edges slightly ragged, with some small to very small tears (none of them affecting the image by far). A slightly larger tear in the left margin, repaired on verso (also not affecting the image). With creasing. Verso: blank, with traces of former mounting. Note: an 18th century impression, with the poem of J. Nomsz. added below the print. Note: dimensions reflect the plate mark. Dimensions: 282 x 198 mm.

Caspar Barlaeus was Poet, Preacher, Professor, Historian, Theologian, Professor in Leiden, Humanist, Renaissance humanist, Polymath, Professor of philosophy at the Athenaeum Illustre of Amsterdam, Preacher at Nieuwe-Tonge, Professor of philosophy at the University of Leiden, and Professor of rhetoric at the Athenaeum Illustre of Amsterdam.
