In 1947 Nicolaas Wijnberg and friends formed 'De Realisten', a group of artists who focused on figurative art and opposed the abstract art of Cobra and Free Images. The group itself organized its first exhibition at art dealer Frans Buffa in Amsterdam. In 1951, work by Wijnberg, among others, was shown in the exhibition 'Realists from seven countries' in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Until the 1970s, events were organized by 'De Realisten'.
