A magnificent painting from the 16th-century Roman School, attributed to a follower of Michelangelo. This impressive work presents an interpretation of the famous Pietà, featuring a powerful and expressive composition that reflects Michelangelo’s influential style.
The painting is executed on canvas and shows signs of age, with visible wear and old restorations. The canvas has been historically enlarged by 7 cm at the top. At the bottom center, the inscription "MA inv" is present, possibly referring to the inspiration source, Michelangelo (Michelangelo invenit).
This artwork is a reworking of a drawing by Michelangelo, preserved in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. The expressive figures, dynamic poses, and dramatic emotion capture the grandeur of the Renaissance master.
With dimensions of 104.5 x 77 cm, this is an imposing and valuable piece for collectors of Old Master paintings. The reverse side features an old wax seal and the numbering 189.
