Beschrijving

Francesco Lojacono was the most important Sicilian artist of the 1800s. An internationally renowned painter, as his works are auctioned in the most prestigious houses worldwide. He was called 'the thief of the sun' by critic René Bazin for how he was able to convey the typical Sicilian atmosphere of that era in his works (humid heat, dusty streets, blinding sun, twisted olive trees, etc.), all possible because he usually painted 'en plein air' those scenes or even just those details on small wooden panels (studies from life) which he later used for larger paintings finished in his studio. Demonstrating the use of these sketches in the aforementioned paintings are photographs of some works taken from the monograph dedicated to him. The painting was owned by a descendant of the artist's brother, who no longer has a residence to display it. The dimensions of the panel are 20 cm in height and 31.5 cm in width. The painting and frame have been recently cleaned and varnished by a professional restorer. The painting is unsigned, but authenticated on the back by the artist's son, Umberto.
De zoon van Umberto, Francesco Lojacono, geeft een verklaring af dat hij aanwezig was op het moment dat zijn vader (overleden jaren geleden) de authenticatie aflegde.
