Conclusions
The ZD3 nails the look and importantly, feature set of what one wants in a low cost DAC. It provides full transparency with excellent noise and distortion. And makes this reviewer happy with such features as single button input selection and large (relatively speaking) volume level display. Company is clearly in tune with its customer needs. Its entrance is enriched by that knowledge and excellent engineering. Really, the growth of Fosi as a company in this desktop category is just amazing.

Fosi Audio's ZD3 is a balanced DAC with excellent connectivity thanks to its multiple inputs and Bluetooth 5.0 chip. The digital/analogue conversion is based on an ES9039Q2M chip, which supports PCM up to 32bit 768kHz and DSD up to DSD512. Three DIP8-mounted OPAs can also be replaced if you wish to have a different tone.


Fosi Audio ZD3: Balanced architecture
In order to deliver the cleanest possible sound, Fosi Audio opted for a symmetrical architecture during the design of the ZD3, drastically reducing the distortion that one channel could create on the other.

Fosi Audio ZD3: ESS ES9039Q2M Sabre DAC chip
Thanks to its ES9039Q2M DAC chip using Hyperstream IV technology and taking advantage of the advanced Sabre HiFi architecture, the ZD3 is capable of handling a PCM signal up to 32bit 768kHz and DSD up to DSD512.

Fosi Audio ZD3: Excellent connectivity
The ZD3 has 5 different inputs, allowing it to adapt to any configuration. Moreover, you can use the HDMI ARC, Optical and Coaxial inputs, each of which accepts a signal up to PCM 24bit 192kHz. You can also use the USB-B input, which accepts PCM 32bit 768kHz and DSD512 thanks to the XMOS XU316 interface used.

Fosi Audio ZD3: Bluetooth 5.0
The ZD3's Bluetooth QCC3031 chip enables it to support high-resolution codecs for stable, reliable wireless transmission: SBC, AAC, aptX and aptX HD. The ZD3 therefore supports up to PCM 24bit 48kHz, i.e. CD quality in wireless transmission.


Fosi Audio ZD3: Interchangeable OPA
The ZD3's amplification stage is based on LME49720 OPAs with an output level of 5Vrms on XLR and 2.5Vrms on RCA. However, as these are DIP8 mounted, you can easily replace them with other OPAs with a different sound profile to adapt the pre-amplification to your tastes.

To ensure the cleanest possible power supply, the ZD3 features a number of very low-noise voltage regulators, ensuring that the power needed to operate the device does not pollute your audio signal.
