De Excite serie is de opvolger van de eerder succesvolle Audience serie. Met deze Excite X12 hebben ze
wederom een prima speaker op de markt gezet. De Excite X12 is de kleinste speaker in deze serie,
maar doet verder absoluut niet onder van de rest in deze serie.
De klank is mooi in balans voor zo'n kleine speaker met een schoon en strak laag, en heel mooi
middengebied en een niet al te pittig hoog. Bij veel (mini-) monitoren zie je dat de lagere
frequenties nogal eens opzettelijk een boost gefilterd krijgen tussen de 100 en 200 Hz om het gemis
aan echt sublaag (beneden 50 Hz) gehoormatig te compenseren. Daar doet Dynaudio gelukkig niet
aan mee, de frequenties verlopen heel gelijkmatig tot aan ongeveer 55 Hz, daarna valt het heel steil
af.
De Dynaudio Excite X12 is een compacte twee-weg luidspreker met een 14,5 cm mid/laag unit. Hij
is 29 cm hoog en 26 cm diep. Daarnaast kan hij maximaal 100 Watt per box aan. Voor een
dergelijke kleine box is dit zeker geen verkeerde specificatie.
Ondanks het kleine formaat heb je in niet al te grote ruimtes (max. 30 m2) echt geen subwoofer
nodig om ook van lekker diepe klanken te genieten. Zolang je er maar een potente versterker aan
hangt. Dynaudio's vragen nu eenmaal de nodige energie.
 
Toevallig waren we in staat om ook de Excite X16 te testen en hierbij viel op dat de Excite X12
naar onze mening (en zeker voor die prijs) iets beter presteerde qua klank dan zijn iets grotere broer.
Ook al is het dezelfde serie, het klinkt toch anders.
De DM-serie hebben we helaas niet getest, maar in vergelijk tot de iets duurdere Focus serie lijkt de
X-serie iets vriendelijker van klank tegenover een nog preciezere weergave. Qua muzikaliteit doen
de X12's in mijn oren niet onder voor de Focus 110's.

De afwerking van de speaker is ook voldoende, maar qua design hoef je het in dit geval niet te
doen. Het is geen opvallende speaker, alhoewel het materiaalgebruik wel weer
helemaal in orde is. Dit is overigens bij alle Dynaudio speakers wel zo.

Even the smallest nuances are reproduced precisely and authentically. The silky-smooth yet extremely detailed high frequency performance is due to the further improved Dynaudio specially coated soft dome tweeter, a legend in its own right.
It is mounted as close as possible to the mid/bass driver in order to achieve the most precise soundstage, acting as an ideal one-point source of sound – where music simply sounds right.
This is also achieved through the finely tuned crossover which, as in every Excite model, features ceramic resistors, air-copper-coils and high quality internal cabling. The impedance is constant and linear over the entire frequency range, thus providing an easy load to any amplifier.
The strict use of highly rigid die-cast aluminium driver baskets in all Excite models further enables a clear, pure, undistorted reproduction of music to be achieved.

This pair of X12 standmounters is our first taste of Dynaudio's replacement for its successful 'Audience' series, and it's the entry level of a four-strong range.


Though they're compact cabinets that seem ideal for putting on a shelf, we found the X12s happiest out in free space. Firing dead ahead rather than toed-in towards your listening position seems to suit them, too – though these niceties are academic until you've got at least 50 hours' playing time under their belts.


Smooth sounds all the way
Their criteria met, the X12s are a smooth, coherent listen. Nick Cave's The Ship Song sounds warm and inclusive, the Dynaudios offering admirable scale and punch.


Low frequencies are deep and solid, the midrange vocals are alive with character, and the top end attacks with control. The whole frequency range knits together painlessly, and the soundstage is well defined.


Challenged a little more by Squarepusher's Come On My Selecter, the X12s have the resources to control the hectic tempo.


Ideally, we'd like a little more rigour – the X12s don't find it hard to reveal detail, but they can struggle to organise it effectively. At the price, though (especially when you factor in the fine build), the X12s are among the most musical speakers around
