Adcom GFP-555

Adcom was one of the champions of reasonably priced high end gear that played beyond its price point. Nelson Pass was brought in as consultant for the now legendary GFA-500 series amplifiers that were designed with an austere black finish, with white and silver models available as special-order options.

A look under the hood of the GFP-555 shows it to be an extremely simple layout. Only two pairs of short ribbon wires, a blue one for each of the selector knobs, and a black pair for the phono section, and that’s it. The simple gain-path philosophy is readily apparent. There really are not many components soldered onto the board, helping to explain the rather relaxed, non-technical sound.

The dilemma that the potential GFP-555 buyer faces is whether to purchase an original or a mk. II. The mk. II has a beefier power supply and some signal path upgrades, but the original 555 features a low-output moving-coil phono option (100 ohm impedance) as well as variable capacitance loading on the moving magnet phono input

Adcom GFA535II

Which brings me to a sub–$400 power amplifier that also dreams big: Adcom's GFA-535 II. It's rated at 60Wpc, it's from a company that has achieved good a track record over the years for reliable, good-value gear, it's made in Taiwan, and it's been fired up in my Real World system now for many months. Does it kill Krells, thrash Thresholds, vivisect VTLs, and bum-rush Boulders?

Adcom had a sensational success with the GFA-535 in the 80s and 90s. A great bargain! For 300 bucks, you got a true dual-mono amplifier designed by Nelson Pass. (Separate power supplies for both channels.) Conservatively rated at 60WPC, with a high-current power supply, it was a lot of amp for the money. Lots of people read this glowing review at Stereophile magazine and bought one.
