Removal of muting
T-4711 features an automatic muting that blanks any noise and "undesired" weak signals while rotating the tuning knob. This slows down the scanning for DX signals as you have to stop and wait to hear if there is something interesting below the preset muting level. This simple modification allows you to hear the FM noise even when tuning. The only thing you need to do is to cut the jumper J133 located behind the wide ribbon cable that connects the main board to the front panel display board. Click the image to see it properly foto 9!!
Filters
T-4711 uses six ceramic IF filters and offers two selectivity modes, NORMAL and NARROW. Switching between the modes is done with a button in the front panel and is indicated on the display. Memory positions store the mode allowing for optimal selectivity when recalling channels from memory either manually or with the auto-scan.

The filters are easy to find from the right side (looking from front) of the main PCB. A little bit of work is needed to remove the board in order to access the copper side. One of the filters, the last in chain, is used on both modes (X106). The NORMAL position uses one additional filter (X101) while the NARROW uses four (X102-105). Like always when changing filters, it is advisable to solder a small 3-pin holder in the place of each original filter. Then it will be much easier to experiment with different combinations. My current setup is all 110kHz Muratas except the last filter in the narrow bank (X105), which is an 80kHz filter. afb 10
The T-4711 usually sells for $200 or more on e B a y. A gold T-4711 went for $380 in 8/08.
