Zeldzame Airstream Excella 280 Motorhome te koop

Deze Airstream is recentelijk mechanisch volledig nagekeken. De motor is compleet gereviseerd met allemaal nieuwe onderdelen (bonnen aanwezig), nieuwe remmen (schijven en blokken), nieuwe banden rondom (6 stuks, want dubbele achteras), nieuwe schokdempers en een grote onderhoudsbeurt inclusief versnellingsbakolie.

Het interieur is een echte tijdcapsule en kan hier en daar nog wat kleine aandacht gebruiken waar ik nog niet aan toegekomen ben. Toch is hij volledig bruikbaar; wij hebben er onlangs nog een week mee gekampeerd met het hele gezin! Voorin zit een chemisch toilet en een uitklapbare tweepersoons slaapbank, achterin twee aparte bedden. Ook is er enorm veel bergruimte – ideaal voor langere trips.

De motor is een Chevy V8 454 Big Block die fantastisch klinkt 🙂. Daarnaast beschikt de camper over een werkende ingebouwde benzinegenerator. Hij draait op 110V, maar heeft ook een aansluiting om de twee huishoudaccu’s op te laden via de netstroom.

Wat achtergrondinformatie:
Airstreams zijn wereldwijd beroemd om hun glimmende aluminium buitenkant, gebouwd met technieken die sterk lijken op vliegtuigconstructie. Deze iconische campers hebben heel Amerika en de wereld doorkruist. NASA gebruikte ze zelfs voor de eerste maanreizigers – de Apollo 11 astronauten verbleven in een Airstream tijdens hun quarantaineperiode na terugkeer op aarde.

Later kocht NASA een Airstream Excella, net als dit model, om astronauten in hun ruimtepakken naar het lanceerplatform in Cape Canaveral te brengen voor Space Shuttle missies. Deze camper kreeg de bijnaam “Astrovan” en werd tientallen jaren gebruikt.

De Airstream Excella 280 is uitgerust met krachtige geventileerde schijfremmen voor en zelfstellende trommelremmen achter. Verder heeft hij stuurbekrachtiging, cruise control, een Firestone luchtveringssysteem (op alle vier de hoeken), een transmissiekoeler, een stabilisatorstang achter en een volledig instrumentenpaneel met snelheidsmeter, toerenteller, verbruiksmeter, brandstofmeter, oliedrukmeter, koelvloeistoftemperatuur en voltmeter.

Dankzij de sterke aluminium monocoque carrosserie hebben veel Airstreams de tand des tijds doorstaan, in tegenstelling tot veel stalen campers uit die periode. Dit exemplaar uit 1979 heeft nog steeds zijn retro-interieur, en er bestaat zelfs een hele industrie die zich richt op onderhoud, restauratie en het moderniseren van deze iconen – mocht je dat willen.

Rare Airstream Excella 280 Motorhome for sale.
This Airstream has been recently mechanically overhauled. The engine rebuilt with all new parts (receipts included), new breaks (pads and disks), new tyres all around (6 of them as it's a double rear axel), new shocks and a recent full service inc gearbox oil. The interior is a time capsule and could do with a few bits fixing here and there which I haven't got to yet but It's still very usable and we camped in it recently with the whole family for a week as it is! There is a chemical toilet and pull out double sofa bed up front and two single beds in the rear. Masses of storage also which is fantastic.

The engine is a Chevy V8 454 big block and sounds great🙂 it also has an on board working petrol generator. It runs on 110v but has a power supply for charging the two leisure batteries from the main electric supply.

Airstreams are perhaps most famous for their gleaming aluminum bodies that borrow significantly from aircraft design techniques in their construction. These fuselage-like travel trailers have travelled extensively around America and around the world, NASA famously used them for the first men on the moon – the Apollo 11 astronauts lived in one upon their return to Earth during their quarantine period to ensure they weren’t infected with any mysterious space pathogens.

Interestingly NASA would later buy an Airstream Excella much like the one you see here and use it for transporting suited up astronauts to the launch pad in Cape Canaveral for Space Shuttle missions. They named this vehicle the “Astrovan” and it remained in use for decades.

The Airstream Excella 280 features heavy duty ventilated power disc brakes up front and self-adjusting drum brakes in the rear. It also has power steering, cruise control, a Firestone air suspension system (on all four corners), a transmission cooler, a rear sway bar, and full instrumentation including a speedometer, tachometer, fuel economy gauge, fuel gauge, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and a voltmeter.
Due to the use of high-tensile strength aluminum monocoque construction for the body, many of these Airstreams have survived the decades that claimed the lives of most of their steel-bodied counterparts. Examples like this one from 1979 still retain their delightfully retro interiors from the period, and there is an entire industry devoted to keeping them on the road, and updating the interiors too if you should so wish.
