Richard van de Gohm first became interested in antique maps and prints many years ago when he was given a genuine old coloured map.
Formally trained as a designer-draughtsman, it was natural that the fine craftsmanship of the engraver and the cartographer, coupled with the art of the illuminator, should find an instant appeal and since that time, van de Gohm has been an avid and serious collector.
He has studied the history, and obtained practical experience in both collecting, and restoring, and for a period of his career earned his livelihood restoring and selling antique maps. He has put much of his experience and knowledge together in this book in the sincere hope that the ever increasing number of people interested in old maps can have the benefit of this knowledge, and so avoid some of the pitfalls that befell the author.
Richard van de Gohm does not pretend that this book is a complete guide to old maps, no single volume could hope to make such a claim, but is comptehensive.
The author has written many books on antique subjects, including maps and prints, and has universally been praised for his easily read style of writing.
