Dirk Bogarde - Sheridan Morley / 9780747546986
Rank Outsider.
From his birth in a taxi to his status as a best-selling author, here is the story of Dirk Bogarde, one of the best-loved and greatest film stars Britain has ever produced.
Sheridan Morley's engaging biography 'handsomely illustrated with 150 photographs' looks at the early years; his distinguished career in films like Death in Venice, The Night Porter, and A Bridge Too Far; and the acclaim that came to Bogarde later in life as an accomplished novelist and memoirist.
Sheridan Morley, who knew Bogarde for more than two decades, draws on their many years of conversations and interviews. The result is an absorbing portrait of a private, supremely talented man "who did, perhaps, always remain something of an outsider."
Review: In Dirk Bogarde: Rank Outsider, Morley tells it like it is, or rather, as he sees the career and films of Dirk Bogarde. Some of his descriptions are downright hilarious, such as his depiction of the making of "Song Without End" and his synopsis of "The Singer Not the Song," both of which are brilliant examples of his writing. Bogarde (understandably once you read this) didn't care for Morley -- I have a feeling their personalities would never have gelled. Nevertheless, this makes for an excellent read and gives some good background into the problems that beset "Song Without End," Bogarde's foray into Hollywood. He really should have taken the Jourdan role in "Gigi" instead.
Review: I'd resisted acquiring this book for years on basis of a vague sense that I had read that it had been overly and unwarrantedly critical of its subject. Having now read it, I'd say this was certainly not so. I believe Morley was intent, perhaps due to a real respect for Bogarde, upon conveying a rounded portrait which reflected this complex character. It is nothing like the Coldstream biography of Dirk Bogarde but then it does not aspire to be; it was also written during the actor's lifetime and there is evidence of some cautious treading around certain aspects of the man. It is not a disrespectful book. Neither is it sycophantic. At time of its publication, Bogarde remarked that it "could have been worse" so even he cannot have thought it too bad. 'Rank Outsider' is a good introduction to arguably the finest actor to come out of Britain in the twentieth century. For Bogarde fans, it is non syrupy but true fans would see it as greatly antipathetic to its subject were it so and even if you already own the 'definitive' Coldstream tome, 'Rank Outsider' is well worth having for the visuals alone. The photographs accompanying the text demonstrate very well the affection Morley must have had for his subject and suggest all the intelligence, humour, integrity, warmth and depth which have drawn successive generations of film lovers to this most interesting of actors.
