"In contrast to his writings, the photographic work of Franz Roh has remained largely unknown. (...) Franz ROH, known mainly for his journalistic work, has left a photographic oeuvre between 1922 and 1933 to be discovered. Important artistic trends of the first half of the 20th century are reflected in the photographs - be it surrealistic photomontages and cross-fades or unfamiliar perspectives, as in constructivist photography. During the 1920s, Franz Roh began to work as an art critic, showing his interest in representatives of New Objectivity. In the mid-1920s, Roh began making collages from 19th century engravings, which are closely related to works by Max Ernst, to whom he maintained a lively correspondence since 1926.

Franz Roh was also in close contact with artists such as Willi Baumeister, Georg Grosz, Jan Tchichold, László Moholy-Nagy and Kurt Schwitters. Inspired by reading Moholy-Nagy's book 'Painting, Photography, Film' (Munich 1925), he began to photograph. He experimented with various photographic techniques such as the photogram, the crossfade, the double exposure and the negative copy.

From 1929 Franz Roh published numerous publications on the subject of photography. He established himself as an early patron of this young medium. The seizure of power by the NSDAP in 1933 and his months of internment in Dachau forced Franz Roh into exile in his own country. It was not until 1945, after the end of the war, that Franz Roh resumed its activities in teaching and as an art critic. He writes for the Munich Neue Zeitung, is appointed president of the German section of the AICA in 1951, and in 1954 he is a member of the PEN club." (free into English translated publisher's note)
