Loung ung (phnom penh, 17 april 1970) is een cambodjaans-amerikaanse mensenrechtenactiviste, internationaal spreker en de nationale vertegenwoordiger voor de campagne voor een landmijnvrije wereld. Tussen 1997 en 2003 was ze in dezelfde hoedanigheid actief voor de 'international campaign to ban landmines', die gerelateerd is aan de vietnam veterans of america foundation.
Het eerste deel van ungs memoires, 'eerst doodden ze mijn vader', gaat over haar ervaringen in cambodja van 1975 tot 1980.
Het tweede deel van haar memoires, 'het kind dat ik was', geeft de periode weer waarin ze probeerde te wennen aan het leven in de verenigde staten met en zonder haar familie en de ervaringen van haar overlevende familieleden. Een deel van haar familie leefde nog in cambodja gedurende de oorlog tussen de vietnamese troepen en de rode khmer.
Het boek beslaat de periode van 1980 tot 2003, en Harper Collins publiceerde het in 2005.

Fellows was certainly guilty of his crime, but he endured and survived human-rights abuses beyond imagination. This is not his plea for forgiveness, nor his denial of guilt; it is the story of an ordeal that no one would wish on their worst enemy. It is an essential read: heartbreaking, fascinating and impossible to put down.

Ik ben absoluut geen lezer, maar na het lezen van de eerste bladzijde van dit boek kon ik er niet meer mee ophouden tot ik het uit had. Hierna heb ik het zelfs nog een keer gelezen!!

Adembenemende verhalen echt afschuwelijk en onmenselijk. Ik las dit boek voordat ik naar thailand zou gaan op mijn terugreis vanuit australie, ik heb er nog veel aan gedacht tijdens mijn verblijf in bangkok.

Een ontzettend dramatisch boek over een gevangenschap in de meest bizarre omstandigheden. Een boek dat niet mag ontberen in de rugtas van een vakantieganger die naar thailand gaat.

Een boek wat je in 1 ruk uitleest en je 'grijpt'. Helaas is er nog geen nederlandse versie, maar die moet er zeker komen. Als je zelf dan ook nog op bezoek gaat bij een nederlandse gevangene in bangkok is het allemaal wel heel bizar. Dat kan namelijk! Als backpacker in australie aan het reizen, ergens in een hostel dit boek gevonden, erin begonnen en kon niet stoppen met lezen totdat het uit was!! Het is me altijd bij gebleven, vooral als je daarna dan in thailand rondloopt. Het lijkt 1 slechte droom, maar het gebeurt er gewoon echt. Een must read! VERKOCHT: The sorrow of war -| bao ninh
