Gunther's acclaimed account of politics and everyday life in the Soviet Union in the years immediately following Stalin's death. He also deals with the arts as well as foreign policy, Khrushchev's secret speech, and the crushing of the Hungarian revolt.
The book deals with the aftermath of Stalin's era of terrible terror. Khrushchev denounced Stalin's deeds and Russia was opening in many ways. They were allowing many more foreigners to visit Russia, and participating in world activities incl the Olympics. The fairly good law and order situation is quite revealing when compared to the present day situation. The book also covered the heady days -for Russia- as they scored a number of firsts in space exploration quite unexpectedly.
The book covers a period when it seemed Russia would really have major change towards some form of liberalisation-when it seems everything got derailed by their action in Hungary. A really eyeopening record of the situation then just some 50+ years ago when contrasted with present day situation where public services have collapsed and there is negative population growth.
