This critique of Sufism has its groundings in a deep study of the SUfistic works like Kiiiib al-Loma' of Sarraj, Kitab al-Ta'rrufof Kalabadhi, Risala of Qushayri and Kashf al-Malijfib of Hujwiri. As an interpreter of the writings of the Great Masters of the Classical sal tradition the author of this work has throughout main-tained the attitude of an impartial judge, whose sole support comes from the weight of the arguments on hand. Thus he avoids in a signal manner the extremes of an over-subjectivist and an over-objectivist apprais-al of the philosophical issues underlying this great spiritualistic legacy. This work is characteristically a philosophical one in the sense that the author has not allowed him-self to be dominated by the bias of institu-tional religiosity of any kind. As a conse-quence the spirit of this essay on Sufism is happily in consonance with the views of those accredited scholars of the Slifi thought, who interpret Sufism as an ideal of Soul-Making or an overall transforma-tion of the self. Besides, this work is not only an exposition and appreciation of the essentials of the Classical Safi Thought; it has also discussed the ramifications of this thought in its diverse cults and Schools. The throb of the warm pulsations of the Sufi-philosophy of Transcendence can be felt at every step in this long-drawn-out disser-, tation—a transcendence that opens on the limit-force domain of the Spirit, which, expressed in al-Ijallaj's `ana'1-1-jaqq% means the unqualified identity of the in-dividual with the Absolute.
