This monograph gathers detailed entries, photography, and the original watercolor sketches that set Calatrava aside as a unique creative master. It includes all of Calatrava’s original collaborative input.

The artist Santiago Calatrava (born in 1951) studied art and architecture at the ETSA of Valencia and engineering at the ETH in Zürich. His best-known works include the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Opera House in his native Valencia, and the Turning Torso in Malmö, Sweden. Calatrava has received the American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2005 Gold Medal. He is based in New York and Zürich.

Santiago Calatrava is not only one of the worlds most prominent architects, but also an engineer and an artist. With recent projects such as the stadiums for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens or the new railway station in Liege, Belgium, he has reached a level of undeniable notoriety in Europe and continues to move further ahead. The only architect ever to have his work exhibited at both the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, he recently completed the main transportation hub for Ground Zero in Manhattan. Winner of the 2005 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal as well as numerous other prestigious awards, Calatrava is one of the greatest and most innovative architects alive. All of Calatrava work, from his astonishing suspended swimming pool at Zurichs Federal Institute of Technology to his latest, startling designs, is featured in this lavishly illustrated volume.

As world-renowned architect, structural engineer and sculptor, he exhibits a remarkable aesthetic and engineering prowess with a simultaneous sensitivity for both the appearance and the anatomy of a structure. With influences ranging from NASA space design to da Vinci’s nature studies, Calatrava’s creations are at once aerodynamic and organic in their associations. Natural forms and human movements inform a number of his projects, with a particular interest in the meeting point of equilibrium and dynamism.
