In his search for simple, essential forms, Joan Miró (1893–1983) created paintings in which he captured the material beauty of the wall with an obsession with detail and poetic expression.
The wall was not only the subject of the illustration, but its physical structure inspired the artist to create images made from white washed canvas, raw jute or sandpaper. His preference for an elongated, extremely narrow image format also reflects Miró's exploration of the wall and at the same time refers to his monumental triptychs and late ceramic friezes, including the important frieze 'Birds that fly away' in the Kunsthaus Zürich, which the volume extensively honors.
