Controversial during his lifetime, a unique success story began with his untimely death. Martin Kippenberger: XYZ, the book accompanying the exhibition at Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien, analyzes the role of the medium “language” in Martin Kippenberger's work from different perspectives. Kippenberger published a total of 149 artist books during his lifetime and cultivated a highly respectful, but also ambivalent relationship with the medium of books, as Walther König, Kippenberger's publisher, told in an interview. In addition to classic art and cultural-historical texts, the book also comes up with a number of other text categories - conversation recordings, a literary text, an artist statement and texts by Martin Kippenberger himself. This makes it clear what a playful but at the same time serious and relentless way of dealing with it Language Kippenberger as he ran his work. The pitfalls of playing with language are made aware of the fact that Kippenberger's picture titles cannot be translated or the question of political correctness. While the main features of Kippenberger's work are analyzed in the form of essays in the first part of the book, the second part refers to individual exhibition chapters. Instead of a biography, there is the artistic photo essay “Martin Kippenberger seen by Elfie Semotan”.
