Rudi van Dantzig was sole artistic director of The Dutch National Ballet for twenty years, and he ranks among the foremost international choreographers. He has constantly focused upon the problems facing mankind, specifically those involving man's inadequacies and thereby man's inability to achieve his ideals. this marks him out pre-eminently as the choreographer of 'la condition humaine'. Over the years he has become the Netherlands' most controversial choreographer largely as a result of his socially critical ballets. The quality of The Dutch National Ballet's performances improved dramatically after Van Dantzig. took over from Sonia Gaskell as artistic director, mainly because of a substantial increase in foreign dancers. The repertoire, on the other hand, became notably more 'Dutch' with the steady increase of work from the resident choreographers: Van Dantzig himself, Hans van Manen and Toer van Schayk. In 1986 the company's achievements were crowned by the move to Amsterdam's prestigious Music Theatre. This book throws light upon Van Dantzig's life and his work: his obsession with dance, his idealism especially as revealed in his poignant and frequently controversial ballets and the directorship he reluctantly took on. A number of his works, grouped under the headings Dances for a Better Society, Dances of Love and Aggression and Dances of Life and Death, are examined at length. The book also contains a survey detailing all Van Dantzig's works, including television and film productions of his ballets, as well as television and film documentaries about him or his ballets.
