Solar tells the story of Nobel Prize winner Michael Beard, a physicist. He has found a way to combat global warming, but Beard is so often under fire in the media for his controversial statements about women (he is now married for the fifth time) that little attention is paid to his ideas on climate change. Due to a crazy accident, Beard sees his chance to rid himself of marital difficulties, revitalize his career, and save the world from an environmental disaster.
In 2005, Ian McEwan undertook an expedition to the North Pole with scientists and artists that served as the inspiration for Solar. Despite the serious subject matter, this satirical novel by Ian McEwan is extremely witty in tone.
Solar is a satire about a jaded Nobel-winning physicist whose dysfunctional personal life and cynical ambition see him pursuing a solar-energy based solution for climate change.
Michael Beard is an eminent, Nobel Prize–winning physicist whose own life is chaotic and complicated. The novel takes the reader chronologically through three significant periods in Beard’s life: 2000, 2005 and 2009, interspersed with some recollections of his student days in Oxford.
A funnier book than any of the other Ian McEwan novels I’ve read. The main character, Michael Beard, is an old fool, really, who is selfish and lazy to a fault, and yet somehow finds people to love him and clear up after him. McEwan also presents us with some great comic moments. One that I will always remember (I was laughing so hard I fell out of bed and woke my husband!) was the scene in the Arctic where MB thinks a certain part of his body has frozen hard and broken off……hilarious!
An enjoyable read, which any Ian McEwan fan will no doubt lap up.
