Welcome

Making a difference takes dedication, motivation and oceans of sheer bloody effort.

Just ask Steve McLaughlin (page 87), the American racer who went from racing TZ Yamahas at Daytona and winning on shaft-drive BMWs to starting his very own FIM-backed world championship.

Can you imagine the obstacles that must gleefully range themselves against anyone trying to pull off such a feat? The mind boggles. But Steve overcame them. His championship – World Superbike – is still with us, while some of the bikes and riders it made famous, the Ducati 916, Honda’s RC30, Carl Fogarty and Troy Bayliss, all made their mark on motorcycling.

Other astonishing feats of creativity and determination in this issue include the stunning BSA A65 (page 36) and Bill Higginson’s remarkable V-twin Norton special (page 78), plus Project Commando (page 97).
