Whenever I begin to learn an opera which I am to conduct, my first task is always to study the libretto. We only need to remember the great trouble composers like Verdi or Richard Strauss took over the libretti they set, to see how important the libretto is for the success of an opera. The audience must understand the words if it is to get full value from an opera.
But the visual side is also tremendously important and I am sure that an illustrated libretto such as this will be of great help to people who are preparing to go to the opera. The texts of operas can sometimes seem confusing, and accompanying pictures will help to make things clear. In recent years, opera has become tremendously popular and I believe books like this one can help break down elitism and make the art form even more accessible.
Mozart's The Magic Flute is an opera which many people encounter when they are very young. It is immediately appealing and exciting. But as we become more mature, we realise more fully the complexity of the opera and its endlessly fascinating examination of human nature. I vividly remember one of the first performances of the opera I saw — in the outdoor theatre at Salzburg in Austria (Mozart's birthplace) when I was a young music student. This extraordinary blend of magic theatre and the natural world is something which remains with me to this day.
Opera is a tremendously lively art form which should always stimulate and inspire the imagination of the audience. I hope this book will help in that process.
