THE MANUAL OF CULTIVATED ORCHID SPECIES
Revised Edition
by Helmut Bechtel, Phillip Cribb, and Edmund Launert
The Manual of Cultivated Orchid Species is an authoritative handbook for professional and amateur orchid growers and botanists.
Its comprehensive text and over 700 full-color photographs reflect years of painstaking research and
development.
This revised edition adds a chapter on cultivation that expands the discussion of composts. In addition, the chapter on classification and the bibliography have been updated, and a number of the photographs have been improved.
A general introduction containing details of morphology, ecology, life histories, classification, nomenclature, conservation, and a fascinating history of the orchid in cultivation is followed by a detailed analysis of 217 genera found in cultivation. For each genus, the text notes distinguishing features, native location, history of taxonomy, derivation of name, and requirements in
cultivation.
A list of species most suitable for greenhouse cultivation appears under each genus — over 1200 in all. Each species is described in detail; the information includes diagnostic features, distribution in the wild, other closely related species, and the synonyms under which the species may be
known.
"Photographically, the book is a godsend to the serious orchid grower. Pictures of the thousands of popular orchid hybrids are readily available, but a collection of full-color portraits of 720 selected species is a rare treat indeed ... a worthy addition to any personal horticultural library and the
perfect gift for an orchid-loving friend."
- Horticulture.
The authors are resident orchid experts at the Herbarium, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Edmund
Launert is also Principal Scientific Officer at the British Museum. A Fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society, Phillip Cribb's orchid expeditions have taken him to Bolivia and Peru, Kenya and Tanzania, Southeast Asia, and Papua New Guinea, as well as to Mediterranean Europe. Helmut
Bechtel is a renowned photographer who specializes in natural history. The color photographs in this book were taken from collections, exhibitions, and from nature in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America.
