During World War II, the German army was the first in the world to introduce the Sd Kfz 251 half-track armored personnel carriers - popularly called `Hanomag`, the first official and full name of this vehicle, mittlerer gepanzerter Mannschaftstransportkraftwagen (m.MTW). The Sd Kfz 251 carriers were used to transport soldiers and heavy infantry weapons (mortars, heavy machine guns, cannons, flamethrowers and rocket launchers). They also served as ambulances, staff vehicles, engineer vehicles and communications vehicles.
