Indonesia's Secret War tells the hitherto-untold story of one of the world's least-known but most protracted liberation struggles.
For thousands of years the Melanesian peoples of New Guinea have had to fight to defend themselves and their land. After the Second World War, west New Guinea was subjected to a new colonial occupier, the Indonesians. Out of resistance to the 'benefits' of Indonesian control was born Organisasi Papua Merdeka, the Free Papua Movement, OPM. For twenty years, with traditional weapons and captured arms, a stubborn guerilla campaign has been waged against the Indonesian armed forces. As the vulnerability of the Indonesian occupiers was demonstrated and the Indonesian response became more savage, OPM grew. So too have the numbers of refugees across the border in Papua New Guinea, fleeing military reprisals. Indonesia's Secret War is the first full-scale account of how they came to be there.
