De serie speelt zich af in 50 voor Christus (kort na de Romeinse verovering) in een klein Gallisch dorp in Armorica, dat op eigen kracht de indringers bestrijdt dankzij een toverdrank bereid door de druïde, een drankje dat bovenmenselijke kracht geeft aan iedereen die het drinkt. De hoofdpersonen zijn de krijger Asterix en de menhir-bezorger Obelix, die door het dorp de opdracht krijgen de plannen van de Romeinen te verijdelen of iedereen te gaan steunen die om hulp vraagt tegen de Romeinse Republiek. De serie, gepubliceerd in Pilote van 1959 tot 1973, werd ook in hardback gepubliceerd voor de eerste vierentwintig albums, eerst door Dargaud, daarna vanaf 1998 door Hachette en ten slotte door Albert René voor de volgende tien albums. Asterix, originally Asterix the Gaul, is a Franco-Belgian comic strip series created on 29 October 1959 by French scriptwriter René Goscinny and French illustrator Albert Uderzo inissue no. 1 of the French newspaper Pilote. After René Goscinny's death in 1977, Albert Uderzo continued the series on his own, before handing over to Jean-Yves Ferri and Didier Conrad in 2013.

The series takes place in 50 BC (shortly after the Roman conquest) in a small Gallic village in Armorica, which fights the invaders on its own thanks to a magic potion prepared by the druid, a drink that gives superhuman strength to anyone who drinks it. The main characters are the warrior Asterix and the menhir-deliverer Obelix, tasked by the village with foiling the Romans' plans or going to support anyone who asks for help against the Roman Republic.

Published in Pilote from 1959 to 1973, the series was also published in hardback for the first twenty-four albums, first by Dargaud, then from 1998 by Hachette, and finally by Albert René for the next ten albums. Cumulative sales of the albums, which have been translated into 117 languages, total 350 million copies, making it the best-selling European comic strip in the world.

The series is primarily humorous, parodying contemporary French society through its stereotypes and regionalisms, as well as the emblematic traditions and customs of foreign countries. There's a strong sense of repetition, particularly in the pirate shipwreck. The drawing is semi-realistic, strongly inspired by the Marcinelle school.
