Terry Pratchett (1948 -2015) was een Engelse schrijver van fantasyboeken. Hij werd vooral bekend met de Discworld-serie (Schijfwereld). Van Pratchetts boeken (meer dan zeventig) werden wereldwijd miljoenen exemplaren verkocht. De boeken worden gekenmerkt door een humoristische inslag met vele verwijzingen naar onze maatschappij, ondanks dat de boeken meestal in een fictieve wereld afspelen. Ook het gebruik van voetnoten is kenmerkend voor het werk van Prachtett, waarin een komische uitstap wordt gedaan van het verhaal of juist commentaar wordt gegeven op het verhaal. Soms gaat het zo ver dat de voetnoten, voetnoten hebben die weer verdere voetnoten bezitten. Voor de oplettende lezer is er veel te halen uit de boeken van Pratchett door allerlei kleine verwijzingen, maar ook als je deze niet door hebt zitten zijn boeken vol fantasie en humor. Andere die naar Terry Pratchett zochten, zochten ook naar Gollancz Victor, Victor Gollancz, Stephen Briggs en Neil Gaiman"" This is a lovely addition to the Discworld series - a large-format book full of wonderful illustrations by Paul Kidby, and a story which involves (and even circles) the entire Disc as well as bringing together many of the most popular characters from the series. The plot: a rumor's going around that Cohen the Barbarian and his Silver Horde [of geriatric heroes] is planning to return to the gods the fire that was stolen in the beginning, as a splashy way of winding up their careers. But the way they've chosen to do this looks like it's going to destroy the Disc, so a motley crew is assembled to intercept them: Rincewind the wizard, Leonard of Quirm, and Captain Carrot of the Watch. They are backed up by the wizards of Unseen University, with the Patrician getting involved as well, with guest spots by The Luggage and an assortment of swamp dragons.
The story's a nice riff on creation myths, heroic sagas, and all those special-effects movies in which the hastily-thrown-together space crew gets one crack at saving the galaxy. And the pictures really are great; there's a shot of "Disc-rise" that's simply mind-blowing... [The detail-oriented might enjoy taking a closer look at the little "Bayeux tapestry"-style border illustrations on the opening pages.]
