Godland Volume 3: Proto-Plastic Party

Former astronaut Adam Archer received incredible cosmic powers while on a mission to Mars: powers that he uses for America’s defense. Chasing a falling meteor to the Great Wall of China, he discovers it has an occupant: a big, green, alien-language-speaking dog. We cut away briefly to the Arctic, where the villain Discordia is torturing super-hero Crashman. And just when it looks as if Adam and the creature might have a meeting of minds, enter the sincerely creepy-looking Basil Cronus.

It’s nice knowing there are still people out there interested in doing a good, old-fashioned, Jack Kirby-styled comic—especially featuring the more cosmic themes Kirby played with in the 70s, which are on display here. Meaning: sagas abounding in super-powered beings, rather than super-heroes as such.

Joe Casey frequently overthinks his projects, densely packing them with ideas to the point at which they’re nearly impenetrable. But Godland is wild fun told in a crystal-clear manner, thanks in large part to Tom Scioli’s work; it’s a bit rough but gets the job done.
