Wolverine: Enemy of the State

Kids love Wolverine. They love his gruffness, his no-nonsense attitude, and, of course, his tendency to skewer bad guys with his adamantium claws. However, kids won’t love this latest edition of Wolverine #1 (unless it skyrockets in value), which features nary a single “snikt.”

Adults and older teen-agers, on the other hand, will enjoy Rucka’s tale of a mysterious young waitress (among other things, apparently) who lives next door to Logan. Working at a coffee shop that The Clawed Curmudgeon frequents, the woman sees a hero at the heart of Logan’s rough exterior and works up the courage to approach the “Mean Man” (as she refers to him in the narration). She’s on the run and in some sort of trouble, and, though many readers would undoubtedly prefer a more straightforward, action-heavy type of tale, even the most ardent of super-hero classicists must admit that the issue is nothing less than curiosity-inducing. Who is this woman? Who is after her? Will she and Wolverine pair up romantically?

And, for those readers who simply can’t get into the story, there’s always the excellent, highly expressive art of Darick Robertson.
