Imagine yourself a teen hero in training. Your pop is the world’s preeminent long-underwear type, an iconic figure. Things are going pretty well, until someone slaughters the world’s foremost super–team. Now, imagine the shock of finding out that dear old dad did it. Then comes the shock of finding out why.

Got the picture? That’s what Invincible’s life is like these days. He always knew that his father, Omni–Man, was an alien, but dad’s mission may not be as benign as was once believed. Is he living a lie? It’s more as if he’s not living the whole truth.

Kirkman takes tired stereotypes about archetypes and turns them on their ear. Invincible is one of the more enjoyable comics on the stands: New readers can enjoy it, but comics aficionados will find plenty of in–jokes to enhance the experience. Witness the various familiar detectives, as well as a bald–headed comics creator who reuses panels for “dramatic effect.”

Here’s hoping that Invincible will keep on delivering for a long time to come.
